![]() ![]() This suggests that the Tamil Qur’an translation has become the locus of power struggles among orthodox and heterodox organizations. The fact that twelve Tamil translations have come out in seventy years indicates the zeal with which various Islamic sects, movements and organizations have tried to posses their own translation. The context of the birth of Arabic-Tamil and its sway for almost one hundred years and its subsequent disappearance are examined. The enormous gap of nearly one thousand years between the arrival of Islam on Tamil land in 738 and the emergence of first Tamil translation of the Quran in 1874 needs be accounted for. This article traces the evolutionary history of the Tamil translations of the Qur’an from 1874 to 2011 with particular emphasis on approaches, attitudes and intended uses.
